With flaws that outweigh his talent, reporter Chuck Tatum (Kirk Douglas) has bounced across the country from job to job. Winding up in New Mexico, Tatum gets work from the local newspaper, but finds that there's not much in the way of pressing news. However, when Tatum catches wind of a treasure hunter (Richard Benedict) trapped in a mineshaft, he turns the story into a media sensation. Soon Tatum is using unscrupulous tactics to draw out the situation, an approach that comes back to haunt him.

As his car is being towed through downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico, down-and-out reporter Charles "Chuck" Tatum passes by the Sun Bulletin newspaper office and rushes inside. After Chuck boldly informs conservative editor Jacob Q. Boot that he is a $250-a-week reporter but can be had for $50 a week, Boot offers him a job on condition he stay clean and sober. Chuck, who admits his reckless, caustic behavior led to his dismissal from many prestigious Eastern newspapers, embraces Boot's terms, confident that his next big break will soon come. A year later, however, Chuck is still working at the Bulletin when Boot assigns him and cub reporter-photographer Herbie Cook to cover a rattlesnake hunt. On the way, Herbie and Chuck stop for gas at a remote trading post and soon discover that the young proprietor, Leo Minosa, is trapped in a cave in a nearby Indian cliff dwelling. When an Indian tells Chuck that the cave is in the sacred Mountain of the Seven Vultures, Chuck

Since re-emerging in the 2000s, Billy Wilder’s superb Ace in the Hole, so ahead of its time in the 1950s with its acidic and unflinching examination of journalistic ethics and human morality, has taken its place alongside Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, and The Apartment as among the director’s greatest works.

The magnetic Kirk Douglas plays Chuck Tatum, a nihilistic, alcoholic newspaperman who siezes on human tragedy to boost his career in Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole, perhaps the most cynical film of the 1950’s. Tatum doesn’t exactly try to murder Leo Minosa (Richard Benedict) for an exclusive scoop, but he misleads the rescue crew into taking the longer route to save Leo, who lies trapped in a collapsed cave. Prolonging the recovery effort prolongs the news cycle, of course, while giving Tatum ample time to engage in a sadistic affair with the trapped man’s wife (Jan Sterling). Occasional religious symbolism feels misplaced and dirty; even Tatum’s final speech to the gathering crowds plays like a perversion of Moses’ descent of Mount Sinai. Ironically, the bright desert sunshine exposes all the evil parasitism and consumerism outside while the film’s only classic noir lighting frames the deterioration of goodness in the form of Leo, stuck inside the earth with only his conscience and regrets.
