Synopsis

Somewhere in this world stalks a thing that is...

An agent from a distant planet has been sent to earth to ship large quantities of blood to his world, where a plague is ravaging the populace. He comes equipped with an interstellar matter transmitter, telepathic mind-control powers, and deathray-shooting eyes. Because he is also affected by the blood disease, he gains control of the town's physician and has him place a nurse at his disposal, while he collects live humans for fresh blood; but gains the nurse's suspicions, along with those of her boyfriend - a town police officer.

Hooptober 11: The Icon of Sin

An entire world of traveling door-to-door salesmen, and this alien kills the only one played by Dick Miller. It’s just not fair.

Roger Corman was the man, here’s a film operating on a budget thats got big ideas, and knows how best to convey them without use of special effects. It’s essentially just a big dude in shades that kills people when they see his eyes. But Corman uses that to tell a rather compelling story about a dying race of aliens desperately trying to save their species, human lives be damned. Roger Corman’s best quality (I feel) was his creativity, both as a producer and director. Big, outlandish ideas being put to screen,…

Space vampire lady: If I do not receive blood within four chronoctons of time, I will have no need for emotions. 🩸🧛🏻‍♀️🛸

I think I actually prefer the Jim Wynorski remake over this Corman original, if only by a little. This is still a fun B movie however. It's got some neat ideas, especially for a '50s movie. It also got a wonderful Dick Miller cameo where he plays a door-to-door vacuum cleaner salesman.

Action!-The March of the (3) Rogers: B Is For Corman

This genre has a certain charm and an immense amount of ingenuity that is simply wonderful. Simultaneously, there is a certain simplicity and campiness that is entertaining to watch. This is all part of the new Corman film about a cosmic envoy who arrives on Earth to collect human blood in order to cure a horrible sickness that is decimating his planet's populace.

Again, all of these players sell the campiness of the situation, not only via their verbal delivery, but also through their physical performance. Garland is fantastic as the heroine. Birch's performance as the alien is excellent; he manages to depict the character's evilness while remaining almost sympathetic…

With the possible exception of his turn in "The Howling", THIS is the film that now possesses my favorite Dick Miller cameo. His pushy vacuum cleaner salesman "Joe Piper" (and his 4th wall breaking final moment) is the bee's knees.

Oh...and this Sci-F-/Horror lark (about an alien in Ray-Ban specs sent to Earth to get blood for his dying race) was actually better than expected. Corman making the absolute most out of his meager budget.

"Don't be a drag, you know you flip me."
    "I'm hip."

It clocks in at an acceptable hour and 7 minutes, and was released in its day on a double bill with "Attack of the Crab Monsters", which had to be a dream pairing for young ticket buyers at the time. Undemanding fun. Recommended.

"You are about to adventure into the dimension of The Impossible! To enter this realm you must set your mind free from earthly fetters that bind it! If the events you are about to witness are unbelievable, it is only because your imagination is chained! Sit back, relax and believe... so that you may cross the brink of time and space.,. into that land you sometimes visit in your dreams!"

Happy 96th birthday to the master of mid-to-late-twentieth-century American B-movies, Roger Corman! Like most (if not all?) of his early work, Not of This Earth is in the public domain, but luckily this print on YouTube is of a pretty good quality, so it made for a really enjoyable way…

Low on budget, but high on ingenuity. "Not of This Earth" is one of the better Sci-Fi films to have come out of the 1950's. The film sees what's essentially a space vampire coming to Earth from his dying planet; a planet that is being ravaged by a plague. The Alien, who goes by the name Mr. Johnson has come to Earth to collect blood specimens, in order to see if it will cure the plague on his home world. With the only cost coming at the expense of all humanity.

Reportedly shot in two days, this is a classic Corman film. The camerawork and effects are nothing to write home about, but for the time they're serviceable. However what…

Not of This Earth is likely what you'll find it you look up sci-fi films of the 1950s on Wikipedia. It's a slight, barely there bit of entertaining paranoid sci-fi horror with that old creaky no budget 50s Corman feel to it.

It's about a Man in Black (he makes those shades look good... and he's got a cool hat) who is actually a man from outer space, sent here to steal our blood and call "Chinamen" sub-humans (ok, he's a bad guy... I'll look the other way at the 50s racism). He's also got laser eyes... or white contact…

Mr. Johnson is an odd man who dresses formally and carries an unusual briefcase. His language is also eccentrically formal and he always wears wrap-around sunglasses. Of course in Los Angeles, he just passes as another weirdo. However, Mr. Johnson is the advanced scout of an alien race that wishes to conquer and "pasture" the human race for its blood supply.

To me, this is Roger Corman's most satisfying film from the 1950s. It marked the beginning of his collaboration with screenwriter Charles B. Griffith, who helped infuse later Corman films with a quirky intelligence that helped them transcend their low budgets.

This also featured Corman's best and most vivacious leading lady, Beverly Garland. Her assurance and naturalistic acting style…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

So for years I just didn't have availability to see this particular Corman sci-fi horror starring Paul Birch as a "alien vampire" from a nuclear war torn world, his eyes pale white, his hearing severely susceptible to noise of any kind. He uses a space travel device, similar to a transporter, to move blood from earth to his home world, as well as, communicate to his leader about their planned phases in order to help sustain their people.

Before I watched the remake from Jim Wynorski starring Traci Lords on cable, there was a big picture of Birch promoting the movie in a creature features review book I bought in 2000 called The Essential Monster Movie Guide (with The Wolf…

    Corman Double Bill #2
    Not of This Earth (1957)

So this one was pretty decent, certainly one of the better films as far as very early Corman goes. A moody science-fiction chiller with Roger’s take on the “parasitic alien” sub-genre, and one of several written by long-time Corman collaborator Charles B. Griffith.

Mr. Johnson (Paul Birch) seems like an ordinary enough citizen living in Los Angeles, but there is a far more sinister truth reveals he’s actually an extraterrestrial infiltrator. As such, Johnson (acting on orders) not only needs human blood to survive, but to also find a potential cure for the blood disease that has ravaged his home planet of Davanna. Meanwhile, local nurse…

  • Review by Curtis ★★★

An alien called Paul Johnson (Paul Birch) has come to This Earth seeking a cure for the unchecked blood evaporation ravaging his world. Gathering up a 50's hoodlum (Jonathan Haze) to be his driver and a local nurse (Beverly Garland) to be his personal death-evader, he starts using his occasionally successful mind control powers on a local doctor to help with the search, as well as gathering up as much human blood and specimens as he can. Meanwhile, in the background, the local police start noticing what could be "vampire" killings. Related?

    Yes.

Actually, for a 50's sci-fi/horror, this keeps things going better than most. It starts a little slow, as we get acclimated to the strange life of the…
