East African green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) Habitat: The humid forest areas of southeast Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia to South Africa.) Status: Although green mamba is not considered endangered or threatened, the destruction of the rain forest is a major factor in the future of this species. Lifestyle: The green mamba is a non-aggressive, tree-dwelling snake with a bright green color on the top and a yellowish-green belly. They produce a powerful venom to subdue their prey, which consists of birds, small mammals and lizards. They are about 6 feet long and weigh about three pounds. The females lay a clutch of six to 18 eggs every two years.

The Central Florida Zoo is currently incubating a clutch of 13 eggs that were produced through its captive breeding program. The snakes at the zoo eat mice. Zoo view will feature a different animal species every other Thursday. All of the animals are residents of the Central Florida Zoo, 3755 U.S. Highway 17-92 near Interstate 4 in Sanford.
